he Arizona Republican, Phoenix, Arizona Territory Saturday, July 9, 1892, page 1, column 6 Laid To Rest Sepulchral and Fraternal Rites Performed The funeral of Newell Herrick took place yesterday afternoon at 5:30 took place for his late residence, corner of Cortez and Jefferson streets. A large concourse of friends and neighbors of the dead and bereaved family followed the remains to the cemetery. The cortege was preceded by members of the Phoenix lodge, No 2, I.O.O.F., and Arizona lodge No 2, F. & A.M. The body was laid to rest amid the beautiful and impressive ceremonies of the Masonic order. ------------------------------ Arizona Weekly Journal Miner, Prescott, Arizona Territory Wednesday, July 13, 1892, page 2, column 5 Newell Herrick, a citizen of Phoenix, well known in this territory, formerly part proprietor of the Commercial Hotel, accidentally shot and killed himself, last Thursday morning, at his home in Phoenix. He had been annoyed by cats at night, and got up at three o’ clock in the morning, and with a double action pistol, started to shoot the felines. In going around the house in the darkness, he stumbled over a small wagon with which the children had been playing, the pistol being pressed to his stomach and discharged. He lived until six o’clock the same evening, when he died. |
