Girard Laurence James (Long John) died Sept. 30, 2017, at the age of 84 at Hospice of the Valley in Surprise. After 11 operations and a courageous battle against esophageal cancer, which he conquered, he finally lost the battle with Myelodysplasia (a bone marrow blood disorder).

Known to his friends as Long John (6'7") he was born in Trail, British Columbia. He was a kindhearted, fun loving man with a zest for life, a sense of humor that brought smiles and laughter to all who knew him. He never forgot your birthday, always a call or card. He was also known as the "Candy Man" to all the nurses and waitresses who served and helped him. He will be missed by all.

He was a great bowler and outdoorsman. Enjoyed making his famous elk chili and New England clam chowder for his friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Kay; his mother Iris and father Maurice and sister Madilene. He is survived by two sons James of Baniff, B.C., and Casey of Phoenix; cousin Gordon (Deb) of Pitt Meadows, B.C.; and the love of his life and caregiver, Sandee of Wickenburg.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Hospice of the Valley, as will blood donations that are much needed and will also honor his memory.
