Prescott Evening Courier, Prescott, Arizona Wednesday, August 19, 1931, page 5, column 2 Verde Valley Notes - Henry C. Durnez passed away at his home below Bridgeport August 11 after an illness of two weeks caused at first by overwork in the hay field during a very hot day. He later developed pneumonia from which he recovered only to have another illness develop from being leaded while working in the mines in Colorado. His already weakened system could not rally from this last attack and after a few days he succumbed. Mr. Durnez was born in Flanders, Belgium, August 27, 1871. He was married in 1898 and with his young wife came to this country in 1899, settling at first in Holyoke, Mass. He came west later and led the life of a miner in Colorado and Goldfield, Nev. He came to the Verde valley in 1917 and worked at the Copper Chief for a while and then bought the ranch were he has since made his home. He leaves his widow, Mrs. Marie Durnez, five married daughters, and Frances, Hazel and Ruth, the last an adopted daughter, and three sons to mourn his loss. He was buried in the Cottonwood cemetery Thursday, the services being conducted by the Moose Legion of which he was a member. The floral offerings were many and very beautiful and a large concourse of friends gathered at the cemetery to pay their last respects. See Also: Arizona Gravestone Photo Project |
