Gweneth (Gwen) Faye Blake was born in Anacortes, Wash., on April 29, 1934, to Howard and Rhoda Boulton. Gwen went home to Glory on May 13, 2009, while at Hospice Family Care in Prescott following a brief hospital stay due to complications associated with staph pneumonia.

Gwen married the love of her life, Norman Charles Blake, in 1956 after he told his base commander that he'd hate to have to go AWOL in order to "marry his girl" if a 24-hour leave wasn't approved!

Gwen graduated from Western Washington University in 1956 and went on to teach in the public school system for more than 40 years. Gwen taught in the classroom for more than 20 years and, after moving to Prescott in 1978, taught music at all five Prescott Elementary schools. Gwen retired in 1996. Her passion was music and she loved seeing her students faces light up when sharing the gift of music. Her favorite saying was "keep a song in your heart."

Gwen was a child of God and is finally "home" with our Savior! While those of us who remain will miss her dearly, the memories of her will continue to inspire. Gwen and her husband Norman joined Prescott First Baptist Church in 1978 after moving to Prescott. After retirement, Gwen enjoyed simply being Grandma. Gwen used to say that she had always wanted a daughter, and part of that wish came true for her in that she shared a big part in raising her granddaughter, Autumn Blake. Gwen's passion was music and she inspired so many during her teaching tenure. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister and friend.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Norman, and her parents, Howard and Rhoda Boulton. She is survived by her sister, Kathleen (Harold) Radloff; her three sons, Howard, Eric and Matthew (Ruth) Blake; and her grandchildren, Howard Jr. and Autumn Blake.

There will be a memorial service at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 23, 2009, at Prescott First Baptist Church, on the corners of Goodwin and Marina streets.

In lieu of flowers, we are asking that donations be made to the Gwen Blake Memorial, c/o Lincoln Elementary School - Music Department, 201 Park Ave., Prescott, Ariz., 86303.

Services entrusted to Hampton Funeral Home.
