Samuel Wasserman, 94, beloved to friends and family, passed from this earth on May 5, 2009. He took his last breath surrounded by loving family at his home in Prescott, Ariz.

Sam was born on Jan. 30, 1915, in New York City. Though his early life was marked by difficulty and poverty, he found security and success in a federal government career with the Department of the Interior.

Sam served honorably in the U.S. Navy during WWII, after which he returned to Washington, D.C., and resumed his civil service career. He brought his bride, Ruth Harriet Barack, of New York City, to Washington, where they settled and raised a family.

Despite not having had the benefit of much formal education, Sam was a voracious reader. He spent much of his early life in the New York City Public Library. Through his self-education, he developed a deep appreciation of language, which he was able to parlay into a career as a professional editor. Beginning as a clerk-typist, he retired as Chief Publications Officer for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, having received numerous awards and honors.

At age 89, Sam moved to Prescott to be close to family following the death of his wife of 57 years. He courageously embarked upon a new life and touched many people with his warmth, friendliness, kindness, wisdom and sense of humor. Sam especially loved bridge, music and theater, and was often seen around town taking in a game, concert, or play. He was adored by family and by the many friends he made in Prescott and will be deeply missed.

Sam is survived by his children Judy and Daniel, their spouses, Grant and Carol, and his six grandchildren, Terry, Grant, Julia, Josh, Nathan and Claire, "The Little One."

A memorial celebration will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 23, 2009, in the social room at Las Fuentes Resort Village, 1035 Scott Drive in Prescott.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Prescott High School Band Boosters, P.O. Box 10651, Prescott, Ariz., 86304, or to the Friends of the Prescott Public Library, 215 E. Goodwin St., Prescott, Ariz., 86303.
