George Mark Babic

Posted 2009-05-28 by Fountain Hills Times
George Mark Babic (May 1925 – January 2009), 83, passed away in Sherman Home Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix, on Jan. 17, 2009.

His immediate family of wife, Joanne and two daughters, Mary and Nina surrounded him in his last days with love and humor.

Ever the provider and protector, he continued to worry about his family, and to endure without complaint.

Born in Montpelier, Vermont in 1925, he enjoyed a lively family with his two brothers, Peter and Rico, and twin sisters, Elsie and Laura. His parents came to the U.S. in the early 1900’s from Yugoslavia.

George graduated from St. Michael’s School in Montpelier; and went into the Army in 1944. After basic training in Georgia, he went to Europe to serve during World War II.

He returned to attend the University of Vermont on the GI Bill, where he met Joanne Mollica; and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering in 1948. They married in 1950 and moved to Connecticut. They had two daughters, Nina and Mary, who now live in Minneapolis and Boston with their families, with four grandchildren in all.

The family spent several summers camping in national parks across the country – driving from east to west coast and back again. The extended family has gathered each summer for reunions since 1996; they spent a week in August in a variety of settings.

He spent his entire career at United Aircraft/United Technologies until he retired in 1988. George and Joanne lived in Connecticut until they retired, when they served in the Peace Corps in Morocco (1988-1990). They lived and worked in the town of Taroudant, Morocco.

The couple also traveled extensively around the world (China, Japan, Europe, Latin America); and in the states, visiting several elder hostels.

George was actively engaged in every community where he lived. He served as a Justice of the Peace in Connecticut; and volunteered in such organizations as the River of Time Museum in Fountain Hills, Home Delivered Meals in both Connecticut and Arizona, and the Fountain Hills Community Center.

After several winters in Arizona, George and Joanne moved to Fountain Hills, AZ permanently in 2003.

George enjoyed golf and tennis and bridge; was a devoted member of the Catholic Church; was a talented artist who produced lovely watercolors and drawings; and was a devoted husband and father.

A memorial service was held at the Church of the Ascension in Fountain Hills, on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 10 a.m. (www.ascensionfh.org).

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, donations can be made to United Food Bank (www.unitedfoodbank.org).
