Dorothy Weikert Yoder

Dorothy Weikert was born May 2, 1912 in Christiansburg, Champaign County, Ohio, the fourth child of Glen and Harriet Weikert.

When she was seven years old, the family moved to Springfield, Ohio where her father’s auction business expanded from household goods and homes, to include registered cattle and large farms.

After graduating from Springfield High School, Dorothy attended Asbury College, Wilmore, Ky. where she met a Texan, Fred Allen Yoder. Fred and Dorothy were married Sept. 8, 1935 and immediately set out for Snyder, Texas. They resided in Texas for a year before selling their small appliance business, home and truck and moving back to Springfield for a new start.

Shortly after that they moved to Middletown, Ohio where their two sons, Glen and Fred T. (Tim) were born. In 1947, Dorothy joined Fred in managing his photography business. She went into business herself by opening a gift shop, The Tinkling Bell. This was especially fun for her because of the buying trips to New York City.

In about 1960, Dorothy became manager of the travel department of The First National Bank of Middletown, Ohio. There she was able to realize her childhood dream of seeing the whole world.

Fred and Dorothy moved to Fountain Hills in 1973, where they started a custom home construction company, and then a partnership with Reed Juett naming the company Yoder-Juett. They were soon joined by their sons and their families and the business became Yoder Built, Inc. Dorothy’s main function was to decorate the models and spec homes. Her keen eye and appreciation for home design and furnishings, developed by helping her auctioneer father, honed by the work in photography, and polished by her travels, were invaluable in this endeavor.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Fred Allen; two sons, Glen (Judy), Tim (Ramona); five grandsons, Timothy, Jason (Terri), Matthew (Chandra), Brandon (Debra), and Dustin; and six great grandchildren, Tyrus, Jalin, Trenton, Brenden, Mitra, and Danika, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Roswell, Paul, and Wilson.

A visitation will be held at Messinger’s Mortuary on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009.

The family suggests donations to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 East Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ. 85014-5656
