Posted 2009-05-28 by Fountain Hills Times
Christopher Kent Hedlund, son of Harold A. “Hal” and Zoa (McReynolds) Hedlund, was born Sept. 22, 1949 in Evanston, Ill. He passed away Sunday morning, Nov. 4, 2007 at his home in Anthony, Kansas at the age of 58.

Chris came to Kansas with his parents and after graduating from high school he attended Kansas State University in Manhattan where he was active in the marching, jazz and concert bands.

On Aug. 1, 1970, Chris was united in marriage with Leslie Jane Hodgson in Salina. The newlyweds moved to Los Angeles, where Chris was a successful professional musician. This union was blessed with four children, Britt, Amy, Heidi, and Payson.

The family made their home in Montezuma, Kansas where Chris worked as president of the Montezuma State Bank and was a rancher and farmer with his brothers.

The family later moved to Dodge City where Chris formed Hedlund Rodeo Co. Chris also served several years as president of the Dodge City Roundup Rodeo where he helped to put the rodeo on the map.

They moved to Arizona in 1991, and Chris and Janie owned and operated Arizona Landscapes, a successful landscaping business in Fountain Hills. Although Chris loved life in Arizona, his heart led him back to his roots and kids.

Chris came back to Kansas where he lived for a short time in Kingman and then moved to Anthony where he was currently working as a realtor for Kingman Real Estate. Chris also enjoyed raising some thoroughbred race horses.

Chris was a member of the Christian Church in Anthony where he enjoyed directing the choir for two years.

He was also a member of the Kansas Racing Commission and served on their board. Chris had many loves in life but his passion was his music and his love for his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his granddaughter, Zoie Beth Gates in November of 2001; and Janie Hedlund in 2003.

He will be missed by his children, Britt Gates and her husband, Jay of Anthony; Amy McClendon and her husband, Mike of Oklahoma City, Heidi Kory and her husband, Jacob of Chandler, Ariz. and Payson Hedlund and his wife, Maria of Anthony; three brothers: Ty Hedlund and Derk Hedlund, both of Montezuma, Kansas and Kyle Hedlund of Gilbert, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Faith and Eli Gates and Karter Hedlund, all of Anthony; and many other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2007 at the Christian Church in Anthony, Kansas with Pastor John Schnelle officiating. Musical selections played included Dream sung by H.A. Hedlund, Walkin' On Up To Heaven's Door performed by the Anthony Christian Church Choir, and I'm Still Crazy After All These Years by Paul Simon.

Memorials in memory of Chris may be given to the Zoie Foundation or the Anthony Christian Church and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
