Posted 2009-05-28 by Fountain Hills Times
Arlene K. Burkett, 81, of Fountain Hills died Oct. 11, 2007. She was born on Dec. 13, 1925 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to William and Laura Krauskopf.

She grew up in the Depression. The summer before high school she started her first paid job as a live-in caregiver/housekeeper for a family. She saved the money she earned at this job to pay her own tuition to Concordia Lutheran High School.

Following her graduation from Concordia in 1944, she worked as a secretary at Branning and Perry Real Estate and Insurance Co. in Fort Wayne.

Arlene married Orien Wayne Burkett on Sept. 13, 1947. They later became the proud parents of James Wayne and Nannette Dianne.

Arlene and Wayne were founding members of St. Michael Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne. Arlene was a hard worker and worked for Fritz Perfect, Wayne Knitting Mill and General Telephone. She also helped Wayne run his business as an egg buyer.

At age 45 she started working for the U.S. Postal Service. There she worked her way up from clerk to secretary of customer service to postmaster.

In 1984 Arlene and Wayne moved to Phoenix for Wayne’s health and to be closer to their children.

Arlene will be remembered for her deep love for her family and friends and her strong faith in God. She touched many lives with her positive attitude, determination and patience.

She is survived by her son, James Burkett; daughter Nannette Burkett Harris and son-in-law Sidney Harris; grandchildren Jared and Jenna Harris, Laura (Burkett) Singletary, Kristen and Suzie Burkett; and her sister Norma (Krauskopf) Spaw.

A visitation was held Oct. 14, 2007 for family and friends at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary. A private graveside service was held Oct. 16, 2007 at Concordia Cemetery Gardens on Lake Avenue in Fort Wayne.

Memorials may be made to the Concordia Educational Foundation, 1601 St. Joe River Drive, Fort Wayne, IN 46805 for the Arlene Krauskopf Burkett Memorial Endowed Scholarship.
