Julia Zavodny Eberspacher

Julia Eberspacher, of Fountain Hills, departed to join God on Nov. 5, 2007, at the age of 85.

Better known to many as “Grandma Julie,” everyone’s child was her grandchild.

Born in Chicago, Ill. on Sept. 3, 1922 as Julia Zavodny, she was adored by everyone who knew her, and she loved BIG. All who were lucky enough to have met her will always remember Julie for her kindness, patience and love. She was always there with a kind word, a radiant smile and a hug. Julie was a devoted wife, marvelous mother and adoring grandmother. She welcomed everyone into her home and treated all as family, related or not.

Julie would spend many hours sewing and crocheting. Be it an afghan, baby booties a blanket or a gag gift, she spent many hours on her creations, inventing patterns or stitches along the way. There was nary a newborn that went without a blanket, hat and booties and a nice note to welcome them into this world. Her creations are stockpiled in many homes across the country.

Julie started her career as a switchboard operator for Bell and Howell where she worked with her soon to be husband, Warren. After marriage, children sidetracked her career and she changed her career path to the Chicago Board of Education in order to have hours that were compatible with raising a family, from where she retired after more than 25 years. She will be remembered as the “lunchroom lady” by hundreds of students from Von Steuben High School in her old neighborhood in Chicago. No students went hungry for lack of money.

Julie’s memory will live on in her sons, John and his wife Sissy from Preston, Mo. and Charles and his wife Paula from Fountain Hills. Her free spirit lives on in her grandsons, Joshua, Charlie and Jacob, and her great-granddaughter Carmella. She loved life and went out fighting for it.

Memorial contributions in honor of Julie can be made to the Hospice of the Valley 1510 E. Flower St. Phoenix, AZ 85014 or online at www.hov.org

There was a memorial service celebrating Julie’s life on Friday Nov. 16, 2007, at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church, 13001 Fountain Hills Blvd. Fountain Hills.
