| Santa Cruz Sentinel (California) Sunday, August 28, 2016 Paulene Faye Young December 5, 1944 - August 19, 2016 Resident of Wickenburg, Arizona Our mother, Paulene Faye Young (Foster), was born at home on December 5, 1944 in Cloquet Minnesota to Lena Harriet (Hilton) and William V. Foster. Paulene was the eighth of nine children. Paulene passed away in the home of her eldest daughter on August 19, 2016 in Santa Cruz, CA. She was 71 years old. Paulene enjoyed the last years of her life in the Arizona desert where the dry heat soothed her arthritic joints and her spirit soared in the company of dear friends in the Wickenburg Arizona community of Westpark. Our mom was known for her irrepressible sense of humor, honest perspective, love of order and insistence on providing homemade desserts, making many occasions special. She loved baking with and for her grandchildren. Paulene joyfully attended college in her middle age, graduating summa cum laude with a bachelor degree in accounting from OIT in Klamath Falls, Oregon. She loved both numbers and words, excelling at Poker, Scrabble and crossword puzzles. Although she hated losing, Paulene took great pride in her grandchildren's growing abilities to challenge and defeat her in epic Scrabble playing sessions. Our mother valued education and life-long learning. Even as her illness progressed, Mom continued to care for and enjoy her cottage in the desert. She reveled in maintaining a cute and tidy home and hosting small dinner parties for friends. Mom knew the cancer had progressed when she no longer possessed the energy to make her friends laugh and when housework drained her. Fiercely independent, Paulene was simultaneously a strong and delicate individual, enduring more pain than she would ever reveal. Her relationship with her God was direct, personal and tenacious. Paulene is survived by two siblings: Patricia (Foster) and Larry Schmitz and Susanna (Foster) Westendorf of Cloquet, Minnesota; her children: Laura Young, Gary and Heather Young (Hamil), Bradley and Sysha Young (Walsh) of Santa Cruz, CA, Jennifer Weast of Las Vegas, NV; Grandchildren: Adrianne (Meyers) and Steve Gabrio, Julia Brownstein, Jared Brownstein, Caden Young, Donovan Young, Ava Young, Sydney Walsh, Michael Rhodes Young and Damon Houck along with numerous nieces and nephews, including Kristal and Larry Hanson and Andrea and Curt Kiehl, their families and her ex-husband, Harold (Sonny) Young, who resides in Klamath Falls OR. No services will be held, at our mother's request. Donations can be made in our mother's name to any organization of your choice that helps Survivors of Domestic Violence.
