Richard (Dick) Berry Norton 1935-2018

Richard (Dick) Berry Norton passed away on Tuesday, October 23, 2018, in Payson, Arizona. He was 83-years-old.

Richard was born on November 10, 1935, in Baltimore, Maryland. He was a 1953 graduate of Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, Maryland.

He was a veteran, having served in the United States Army from 1954-1956. He loved his country. While in the military he excelled in marksmanship and received numerous awards after being named to the Army National Shooting Team. Throughout his life he continued to win state, regional and national titles in several disciplines including flintlock and percussion cap. He held the offhand aggregate Schuetzen Rifle national scoring record until he was 73-years-old.

Richard was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hiking, biking and rockhounding in the hills surrounding Payson. He was truly concerned about animal welfare and adopted a little black and white dog named Patches, his best friend and constant companion for many years. Subsequently, Dick and Patches were taken in by and formed many new friendships with his buddies from the dog park.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Vivian and William Norton, and by his oldest daughter, Deborah Molano, in November, 2017. He is survived by a sister, Jacqueline Julian and her husband, Louis, and by his son, William Norton, and daughter, Donna Sullivan. All of Dick's children were from his first marriage. He is also survived by four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a niece and nephew.

An open public, Military Honors service will be held on November 13, 2018, at 1:00 p.m., at Messinger Payson Funeral Home, 901 S. Westerly Rd, Payson, AZ, 85541. He will be buried at a later date in Phoenix, Arizona at the Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Humane Society of Central Arizona, 605 W. Wilson Ct., Payson, AZ 85541.
