Janice Fasano left this world for her real home on Tuesday, Jan. 1.
Born on Sept. 17, 1937 in Lowell, Mass. Janice, lived in many coastal states throughout her childhood and grew to love the ocean. She spoke of times as a young girl when she practically lived on the beach while residing in Wildwood, N.J., and instead of going home for lunch, would buy hot dogs with coins she found under the board walk.
After moving to Newburg, N.Y., Janice met and fell in love with Sebastian (Sam) Fasano, and they were married on Aug. 8, 1955. Janice and Sam had two children, Patti and Sam III, and in 1960, relocated to Phoenix. The couple resided there until 2015, when they moved to Wickenburg.
Janice was known for her love of all people, an incredible sense of humor and a tremendous talent for cooking. These three gifts were often combined, as she and Sam always welcomed friends and family to their home for a good meal.
She never met a stranger and had a real knack for putting people at ease, and drawing a smile out of the grumpiest people.
Later in life, it wouldn't be unusual to find a table full of friends more than half their age who found them to be not only genuine, but entertaining.
Nine years ago, Janice and Sam found Desert Breeze Community Church (DBCC) and kept strong ties with their home group even after they moved to Wickenburg. The couple drew much love and support from the church members who became best friends.
In her last months, Janice inspired her friends and family by demonstrating incredible courage and grace as she struggled physically. Her sense of humor stayed intact, and she would rather make a visitor feel comfortable then let on how she was really feeling. She was a wonderful mother. She was gracious and loving until the end, when she slipped peacefully into the hands of her creator.
Janice was preceded in death by her husband Sam, and is survived by both children, Patti (Steve) Slattery of Wickenburg and Sam (Michelle) Fasano of Glendale. She is also survived by four granddaughters who considered her their closest friend: Janice (Aaron) Wolfe of Wickenburg, Leah (Amanda) Queen of Gilbert, Kara (Peter) Clay of Fort Collins, Colo., and Adria (Nash) Oliver of Wickenburg. She also left behind 12 great-grandchildren, whom she loved fiercely. She is also survived by her sister Jane Tate and brother Edward Sparhawk, and nieces Carol DeRosa, Cher Tate and Ann and Francine Minadeo; nephews Jim Tate, Michael, Peter and Paul DeRosa.
A memorial will be held for Janice on Sunday, Jan. 20 at 3 p.m., at Desert Breeze Community Church, 17600 N. Black Canyon Highway No. 101, Phoenix. In lieu of flowers, Janice would want donations made to her church (DBCV).
