Catherine Loggie Holst, 89, who lived in Flagstaff and Sun City West for many years, died on March 12, 2009. She was born in Wilkinsburg, Pa., on Jan. 24, 1920.

She grew up in Pittsburgh where she graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology and worked on the Manhattan Project during World War II. With her late husband, Lt. Colonel (Ret.) William Walker Holst, she raised seven children while living in Germany, Japan and five U.S. states. Settling in Arizona in 1961, she taught at Flagstaff schools for many years, then moved to Sun City West. There, she was active volunteering with the Pioneer Society and at Luke Air Force Base. Eventually she found a second home at Freedom Inn where she was surrounded by friends and a supportive, loving staff. She also spent many days at Sun City West Women's Club with card-playing friends and social activities. She brought happiness to all who knew her.

Mrs. Holst is survived by all her children; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Norvel Owens Mortuary Chapel, 914 E. Route 66 in Flagstaff.

Condolences can be sent to www.norvelowensmortaury.com.
