Phillip Martin Colson, 59, formerly of Flagstaff, died Monday, March 2, 2009, five days after heart surgery in San Diego.

Mr. Colson was born Nov. 18, 1949, in Phoenix. He went to Gerard and East high schools then on to set the curve at Arizona State University. He and his father built all over Arizona. He continued to apply his genius in building after his father retired. He built and owned The Bird of Paradise Lounge in Phoenix and Shorts and Sports Bar and Grill in Flagstaff. He moved to Ocean Beach, Calif., in September 2007 for health reasons. Mr. Colson had always dreamed of living in Ocean Beach by the pier. He bought a sailboat and had looked forward to sailing down the coast to Mexico but never got the chance. He lived and loved life to the fullest. He touched many lives in many ways. He was truly loved and will be greatly missed.

Mr. Colson is survived by children Benjamin, Graham and Josie Colson; eight grandchildren; his father, Albert H. Colson; and sisters Marie Baker and Deborah Cargile.

He was preceded by his mother, Adma Colson.

A memorial service will be March 21 at 2 p.m. at Sunland Mortuary, 15826 Del Webb Blvd., Sun City. Monsignor Michael O'Grady will be officiating. All are welcome to join the reception at the family's home following the service. Later the family will spread his ashes in the ocean he loved so much.
