| Wickenburg Sun (Wickenburg, Arizona) Wednesday, June 26, 2019, p. A-5 Joan Ann Miller passed away peacefully on June 3, 2019, in Mesa. She was born August 27, 1927 in Chicago, Ill., to Frederick and Harriet Becker. She is survived by her sons Jim (Diva) Miller, Tom (Sharon) Miller, Sam (Barbara) Miller, David (Kim) Miller, daughter Virginia (Butch Farley) Wilson, and son-in-law Robert (Peggy) Chapman. She is preceded in death by her husband James "Jimmy" Miller and daughter Peggy Chapman. In 1941 the Becker family relocated to the CV Ranch in Chino Valley. It was here where she met her future husband. Jimmy came to her rescue out on the ranch after a horse riding accident rendered Joan with a broken leg and no way to get home. The two were wed Sept. 28, 1944, and enjoyed 59 beautiful years of marriage together. With her husband being a working cowboy, Joan supported him as he worked on numerous ranches around Yavapai County including Cowden's, the Coughlin's, the Yolo's, Fain Land and Cattle Company and many others all while raising their six children. Joan always took a great deal of pride in her accounting skills that she used throughout the entirety of her life gaining employment as a bookkeeper for many businesses over the years and around the county including Solts Clothing Store, Figgins Chevrolet, and Watter's Garden Center. The Millers settled on five acres in Williamson Valley in 1972. It was here where James and Joan became known as Boppo and Nanno to their beloved 16 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren. It was also here that Joan planted a large Christmas tree field, where she sold and gifted her beautiful trees for many years. Joan also always maintained a beautiful flower garden and lawn for all her friends and family to admire and enjoy. Joan dearly loved horses. Jimmy and Joan bred and raised numerous quarter horses throughout their lives and were both active members of the American Quarter Horse Association. She was also an avid follower of horse racing and the Triple Crown; always eager to discuss some of the best race horses that ever lived, her favorite being Seattle Slew. Joan was an avid knitter, quilter, and seamstress; often crafting handmade western shirts and quilts. Many of her extended family can still reach into their dresser and find a pair of her hand knitted socks, sweaters, stocking caps or mittens to be cherished by generations to come. Joan will be sincerely missed by all her family and friends, but her memory and legacy will continue on. We pray she finds herself sitting on her new screened-in porch with "Dad" and Peggy, all enjoying a nice, stiff Cutty Sark scotch.
