| Arizona Republic (Phoenix, Arizona) Thursday, May 18, 1972, p. 25 Former Judge Burke dies of cancer at 63 Former Superior Court Judge John E. Burke, 63, of 933 W. Avalon Drive, died at his home last night of cancer. Burke, who resigned from the bench in March 1971 because of ill health, was elected to Division 23 of the Maricopa County Superior Court in November 1968. The judge, a Democrat, suffered from failing health from the outset of his term on the bench. On Jan. 7, 1969, less than two full days after taking office, Burke collapsed in his chambers. In March 1970, the judge entered the hospital for tests after complaining of severe pains in his side. In August 1970, Burke suffered a fractured hip and a month later returned to work in a wheelchair. Six months later he resigned. Burke, a native of St. Paul, was graduated from the St. Paul College of Law. He served on the Ramsey County, Minn., commission from 1948 to 1952. He practiced law in Minnesota and Illinois before coming to Phoenix in 1952. After his arrival here, he was in the mining business until resuming the private practice of law in 1960. Burke was a member of the American Bar Association and the State Bar of Arizona. He is survived by his wife, Irene, and two children, John E. Burke Jr. of Phoenix and Mrs. Marie Lia of San Francisco, and a sister out of state. The body is at Whitney and Murphy Funeral Home. See Also: Find A Grave |
