Francis E. Coles, 94; headed furniture firm

Francis Edgar "Frank" Coles, 94, president of the Coles Trading Co. and president of Dorris-Heyman Furniture Co. from 1925 until 1945, died yesterday in a Phoenix nursing home.

Mr. Coles, 6519 N. La Palma Oeste Drive, was born in England and came to Arizona around the turn of the century from Chicago. He was employed by the Phelps Dodge Corp. in 1898.

He was elected director of the Valley National Bank in 1934 and after resigning was appointed director emeritus in 1965. A founding member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Marcos de Niza Council, in Phoenix, Bisbee and Flagstaff, he was a member of the Arizona Club, Phoenix Country Club and former member of the Phoenix Kiwanis Club. He also had been a partner in the Central Commercial Co., a general store in Kingman.

Survivors include two sons, James H. of San Diego and Hubert M. of La Jolla, Calif.; three daughters, Mrs. Carolyn Collins of San Francisco, Mrs. James T. O'Neil and Loretto Coles, and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Frank E. Coles Jr., all of Phoenix; 27 grandchildren, and 46 great-grandchildren.

Rosary, with a 4th Degree KofC chalice service, will be at 7:30 p.m. today in Whitney & Murphy Arcadia Chapel, 4800 E. Indian School.

Mass will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow in the Church of St. Francis Xavier, 4715 N. Central. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Brophy College Preparatory School, 4701 N. Central.
