Zane J. Bell

Posted 2009-06-13 by Eastern Arizona Courier
Zane J. Bell was born Oct. 24, 1960, in Safford to Bob and Evelyn Bell and entered into rest Sunday, May 10, 2009.

Although his life was cut short, through family and friends, his memory shall remain strong. He didn’t know a stranger; he had a very unique personality and got along with everyone. He was also a very generous man; he would always divide up whatever he had. He would go out of his way to help someone in need. His best friend from his youth said if he hadn’t seen Zane for a while, even years, he would talk to him like he had only seen him yesterday and no time had passed. That was Zane.

Zane loved working at the observatory up on the mountain; he loved working in the snow, and he loved watching the animals and being in the mountains. Some other things he loved doing were trap shooting, going hunting and fishing and collecting coins.

Zane went to school in Safford and graduated from Safford High in 1978. In between the time Zane and Nancy got married, Zane did a hitch in the Army and a year at the Eastern Arizona College.

In 1986, Zane and Nancy started dating and were married in November 1987. J.C., their first son, was born in December 1988, and Bobby was born in August 1990. When Zane and Nancy had married, Nancy had a daughter already, and her name was Brandi.

In Zane’s eyes, Brandi was always his daughter. Zane legally adopted Brandi in April 1992, but they said she was always his. When Nancy said they needed to have another little girl, he said, “I don’t need another little girl; I have all the little girl I need right here.” Brandi said she was always jealous of the boys, but, in reality, the boys were always jealous of her because she was Daddy’s little girl.

Zane loved his family and had a special fondness for his grandchildren, Kacey, Kolbey and Konstance. Zane took care of Kacey when she was born until she was about 4 years old, when his health wouldn’t let him anymore. They said when the grandkids would get mad at their parents, they would say, “We’re going to Grandpa’s; he’ll let us do whatever we want!”

While we were getting information for Zane’s life story, Kacey came up while everyone was talking and said, "I’ve got something to say about Grandpa’s story." She said, “He loved his grandkids, and he protected us!” What more could you say?

He was a colorful character, but he was a good man. He was a good friend, a good dad and a good grandpa. Nancy said he was the love of her life and she won’t know what to do without him. Everyone who knew this man loved him because he was just Zane. Zane Bell touched our lives in some way, great or small, and we will miss his immediate presence in our lives.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, May 15, in the Safford LDS Stake Center. Interment followed in the Safford Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of Caldwell Funeral Chapel.
