Phoebe J. (Cox) Gatlin

Posted 2009-06-13 by Eastern Arizona Courier
Phoebe J. Cox Gatlin, best known as “Phoeb,” was born Sept. 16, 1930, in Duncan at her grandparents’ farm, where she spent the majority of her childhood.

After graduating from high school, she married the love of her life, Wayne E. Gatlin. Shortly after they were married, Wayne was drafted into the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. When Wayne was drafted and stationed in California, Phoebe moved to San Francisco to be with him. While living in in San Francisco, their only child, Vicki, was born.

After Wayne’s honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, they moved back to the Duncan area and lived at the Cox-Sanders Ranch. Upon moving back to the Duncan area, Wayne and Phoebe helped their families (Otho and Mary Cox and Gus and Bertie Sanders) with the day-to-day operations of the ranch.

Wayne and Phoebe spent their free time working with Otho (Granddad) and Mary (Mimi) training and racing thoroughbred horses, which they bred and raised.

This was the family business and was one thing they enjoyed throughout their life. More than that, Phoebe enjoyed spending time loving, caring for and helping her family.

Phoebe and Wayne’s love lasted for 58 years until his death in November 2008.

Phoebe will be best remembered for the compassion, love and generosity that she had for all. She will be greatly missed by all.

Phoebe entered into rest May 16, 2009. She is survived by her daughter, Vicki (Dennis) Cook; grandchildren, Dennis B. (Sherry) Sharp and Tawnah (Moe) Villalba; great-granchildren, Taquel Sharp, (Little) Wane Sharp, Phoebe Sharp, Amber Sharp, Abby Sharp, AJ Villalba and Stefe Villalba; great-great-granddaughter, Mary Jane Sharp; and step-grandchildren, Levi (Lindsey) Cook, Pecos Cook and Jacy (Renee) Cook, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Phoebe is preceded in death by her husband, Wayne; her parents, Otho and Mary Cox; her siblings, Julia, Bud and Cecilia Jo; grandson, Wayne E. Sharp and nephew, Tom Lewis.

A graveside memorial for Phoebe was May 23 at the Duncan Cemetery under the direction of Safford Funeral Home.
