H. "Skeet" Bowman dead at 79

H. "Skeet" Bowman, 79, former sheriff of Graham County for 20 years, died Sept. 22, 1982 in Mountain Graham Hospital.

Mr. Bowman was born in Hope, N.M., was brought to Clifton in 1912, and settled in Safford in 1914. He owned and operated ranches in the Safford area and was the 1936 Champion Rodeo Calf Roper. He became deputy sheriff in 1940 and was elected sheriff in 1944. He was a past master of the Safford Masonic Lodge and a member of the Elks.

He also was a member of Desert Caballeros, and was Sheriff of the Year for Arizona in 1966.

He is survived by his wife Jewell; sons, Everett and Larry; daughters, Betty Cluff, Eddie Fay Wilson, Susan Hawkins and Nelda R. Gardner; a brother and a sister, 27 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services were Saturday in the Safford Fifth Ward Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
