Dr. James Holleran, 78, of Prescott, Ariz. born Feb. 8, 1931 in Brooklyn, N.Y., passed away May 26, 2009 at Yavapai Regional Medical Center.

A Rosary service will be 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2009 with visitation one-hour before at Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home, corner of Cortez and Carleton with Deacon Tony Humphrey officiating. A Celebration Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 3 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Rev. Darryl Olds C.M.F., followed by a luncheon at the church. Inurnment will be at Prescott National Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials to KMH Save The Children Foundation, 1909 Timber Point West, Prescott, Ariz., 86303.

Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home assisted the family with final arrangements.

Dr. James A. Holleran died May 26, 2009, at Yavapai Regional Medical Center. He was born Feb. 8, 1931, in St. John's Hospital, Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Frank and Emily (Hitzlberger) Holleran. Jim was 78 years old.

Jim attended College of The Holy Cross in Worchester, Mass. In his senior year, Jim was the college's #1 tennis player. He graduated cum laude in 1952. Although for a short time he considered a career in professional tennis, he decided to devote himself to the practice of medicine. After graduating from New York Medical School and completing a medical internship, Jim served in the U.S. Navy as the commander of a Marine medical company in Okinawa for two years.

After his marriage and the completion of a surgical residency, Jim established a surgical practice in Long Island, N.Y. Jim was an attending surgeon at Stony Brook University Hospital. He retired as Chief of Surgery of St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson, N.Y., following a 30-year-long practice. He was a past president of the Suffok County Medical Society and an active member of the American Medical Tennis Association.

Jim and his beloved wife Eileen Olson Holleran moved to Prescott in 1998. They would have been married 50 years this Oct. 10. Jim was a devout member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He also volunteered with the Yavapai County Medical Corps.

Jim is survived by his wife, Eileen; sons James (wife Stacy) and Robert; daughters, Mary (husband Scott) Hennessee, Sheila Banks and Leslie Holleran (husband Kevin Henderson); brothers John (wife Anita) and Frank (wife Margaret); and nine grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathleen.

Rosary will be 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2009, with visitation one hour before at the Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home, 303 S. Cortez, Prescott.

A celebration mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 150 Fleury, Prescott.

A military ceremony will be 10 a.m. Thursday, June 4, 2009, at Prescott National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to KHM Save the Children Foundation, 1909 Timber Point West, Prescott, AZ 86303.
