Augusta "Gussie" Rufer, 100, passed away Friday, June 5, 2009 in Prescott.

She was born in Dortmund, Germany on Oct. 21, 1908. She had celebrated her 100th birthday in October in Las Fuentes Village.

Gussie immigrated through Ellis Island to the United States in the late 1920s. She was followed by two brothers and a sister, leaving her parents, a sister and three brothers behind.

She married Anton "Tony" Burk and gave birth to her son John Burk in 1930. Tony passed away in 1944 and she was remarried to John Rufer in 1946. John died in 1982.

She resided in Glendale, N.Y. until 1948 when she took an adventure trip to Culver City, Calif. She resided there since 1948.

In 1973 she followed her son and family to Ash Fork where he built the Ash Fork KOA. She loved being a greeter there and made many friends and made many foreign campers feel at home. She was a generous, giving woman who will be missed by many.

She is survived by her son John and his wife Peggy; three grandchildren Bob Burk, Donna Stephens and Ellen Levin; five great- grandchildren Erik Levin, Bobby Burk, Seth Burk and Katie and Daniel Burk; a brother Fritz Thiem; and numerous nephews and nieces.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Augusta A. Rufer, 100, of Prescott, Ariz., born Oct. 21, 1908, in Dortmund, Germany, died June 5, 2009, in Prescott.

Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
