Ira Barnes Hartzog Jr.

IRA BARNES HARTZOG JR. SUN CITY, Ariz. - Ira Barnes Hartzog Jr., born to Ira Barnes Sr. and May Bentley Arnold on July 15, 1918, passed away May 31, 2007.

He married Ruth Jane Thompson March 14, 1942, and they had four children, Ira Hartzog III, Clarice Mears, Betty Ruth Roth, and Nancy Anderson.

Mr. Hartzog was active as a professional pilot, an Air Force officer, and an aviation executive for more than 50 years. Prior to World War II he was a civilian instructor training Army Air Force cadets. He accepted a Commission and flew transport routes worldwide including nearly 800 hours over enemy territory on the Hump route from India to China. He was a training captain for Pan American Airways, a corporate pilot flying international routes for Irvin Airchute, and a division manager for Butler Aviation. He retired from the Wisconsin Air National Guard as a Lt. Colonel. He founded and was CEO of Hartzog Aviation Inc., one of the largest sales outlets for General Aviation aircraft in the country.

To increase general aviation safety he founded Flight Proficiency Service and Airmanship. Airmanship produced 28 training video tapes to improve pilot safety. He was on advisory boards for Beech Aircraft and Southern Illinois University and was a board member for the National Business Aircraft Association. Memberships include the Quiet Birdmen, The Retired Officers Association, and The Hump Pilots Association. Decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Theater Ribbons and others.

He leaves nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday, June 4, in Camino del Sol Funeral Chapel, 13738 W. Camino del Sol, Sun City West, with visitation from 2 p.m. to service time Monday.

Interment at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, in National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, Phoenix.
