Published in Mohave Daily News Online from Feb. 26 to Feb. 27, 2021 - Bullhead City, Arizona - Merle Raeburn "Ray" Lackey, age 80, passed away on Thursday, February 18, 2021 at his home in Bullhead City, Ariz. He was born March 24, 1940 in Southgate, Calif. Loved ones describe him as a loving husband and brother, opinionated, knowledgeable, a strong leader, proud and loving father and man to learn from. He was very proud of his Cherokee lineage and always addressed family with "O'SIYO" and "WADO". Ray graduated from Compton High School in 1958. He met his loving wife Sue Ann in high school and they married right after graduation. After high school, Ray went into the Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1964. He then pursued a career in law enforcement with the LAPD along with his sister and brother. Together, the three of them served over 75 years. He retired at the rank of Detective II in 1991, after 26 years of service. Ray was a cherished member of society serving 30 years in the Elks Club, Exulted Ruler in 2000, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Sons of the American Revolution, American Legion, and Masons 2nd Degree. Ray was currently the President of the SAR for the Colorado River Chapter and on the Transportation Committee for the City of Bullhead. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Sue Ann Goddard (2016); his father, William Jack Lackey (1962); mother, Clara Opal Woods (1997); and brother, Michael Lackey (2015). He is survived by his daughters, Deborah Strickland of Bullhead City, Ariz. and Joy (Michael) Schneider of Madison, Wis.; sons, Kenneth (Wendy) Lackey of Menifee, Calif. and Raymond (Bridget) Lackey of Plano, Texas; sister, Jackie (Jack) Howell of Eden, Utah; sister-in- law, Sandra Lackey of Las Vegas, Nev.; brother-in-law, Charles "Bill" Goddard of Haltom City, Texas; 18 grandchildren; 10 great- grandchildren; two nieces and three nephews. The Memorial Service for Mr. Lackey will be held at 11 am MST on Saturday, February 27, 2021 at the Desert Shores Community Baptist Church at 2625 Landon Drive in Bullhead City. The services can be viewed live on the church Facebook page. An additional service will be held in Zena, Oklahoma over Father's Day weekend. |
