| Published in The Arizona Republic from Apr. 13 to Apr. 18, 2021 - Phoenix, Arizona - Friends and family often called him "The Energizer Bunny" as it seemed no matter the obstacle or set-back, David would persevere and triumph. It is with great sorrow we announce that David C. Alexander III passed away Sunday, April 4, 2021, his wife and daughter by his side. David was born in New Orleans, LA on July 13, 1941 and as a young child moved to the Atlanta, GA area. He attended Georgia Military Academy and Druid Hills High School, graduating in 1959. His higher education began at the University of Georgia in Athens where he earned a B.B.A. in 1963. Honored to serve his country, he joined the armed forces and served as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. David was a platoon leader and proud paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne, entering combat in 1965 in the Dominican Republic and receiving various military honors, including the Combat Infantryman's Badge. Post-military, he continued his education and earned an M.B.A. at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA in 1969; a Juris Doctor at the University of Virginia Law School in Charlottesville, VA in 1973; and a Master of Laws in Taxation at the New York University Graduate School of Law in New York, NY in 1976. He practiced law at White and Case in New York, NY as an associate attorney in the tax department and later as a senior partner at Lewis and Roca in Phoenix, specializing in partnership and real estate tax matters. David was a Sustaining and Founding Fellow of the Arizona Bar Foundation and a frequent lecturer on matters of federal income taxation. When health issues began, he retired from the active practice of law and became an entrepreneur and investor in entertainment, real estate, and racing enterprises, turning his hobby of auto racing into a business venture. David's tales of high school antics, days of "jumping out of airplanes", and golfing, skiing, motorcycling across Europe, sailing, and RV'ing across the country with Holly could fill a book, and someday, might. He was a friend and mentor to many and will be remembered for his incredible and beautiful mind, generosity, tenacity, dry wit, and never-ending quest for the next deal, trip or adventure. David leaves behind his loving wife and companion of thirty-one years, Holly, her children, Matt and Rebecca DeVaney, daughter-in-law, Rachel DeVaney, M.D., grandchildren, Alexander, Parker and Truman, and brother, Jerry Alexander. To honor his wishes, local services will not be held and David will be laid to rest with military honors in Decatur, GA. A celebration of David's life for friends and family in Arizona is planned.
