William Warren Mizell

Posted 2009-06-19 by Kingman Daily Miner
William Warren Mizell, also known as "Bill," was born on Nov. 4, 1922, in Baldwin County, Alabama, the eldest of nine children. He passed away on Monday, June 15, 2009, in a Phoenix hospital. His brothers include John, Fred, Edward (Leslie), Jessie (Tommy), Milton (Mick), James (Jimmy) and Roy, and one sister, Velma.

As a child, Bill dreamed of flying planes. When he was in the Air Force, he was assigned to the flight line crew. Because of his desire to fly, he took private lessons when he was stationed at Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix. This began a life-long love of flying.

In 1942, he was stationed at Kingman Army Airfield as an Air Force top turret gunner on B-17s (flight engineer). His talent for aircraft maintenance and his slight build quickly made him a member of the flight line crew where he serviced the aircraft at night.

When WWII ended, Bill worked with the salvage crews parking all the WWII aircraft, which would later be dismantled. Bill also worked for Central Commercial Company and for Southern Union Gas. Afterwards, he went to work for Ford Motor Company in 1955 at the Proving Grounds and retired after 27 years of service. Once he retired, he became the night watchman for General Cable Company, where he continued working for several years.

He married Josephine Jane Edgar on Jan. 25, 1945, in Kingman. Bill and Josephine raised three sons in Kingman, Jon Roger, James Edward and Robert Lee. Josephine preceded Bill in death on Feb. 2, 1992.

Bill and Elizabeth Evelyn White were married on Feb. 29, 2000, and have resided together in Kingman for the past nine years.

Bill was a member of the Kingman Air Museum and would frequent the museum on Saturdays. He was known for his love of flying and for his wonderful, detailed stories of life experiences.

One of his favorite things to do was to go to Kmart for breakfast where he would visit with his friends. His ease of talking with others, his winning smile and his straightforwardness were well known and liked by many other people in Kingman. He was a wonderful father, beloved husband as well as a friend to many.

Bill is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Evelyn Mizell of Kingman; his sons, Jon Roger Mizell of Kingman, James Edward Mizell of Satsuma, Ala., and Robert Lee Mizell of Albuquerque, N.M.; his granddaughter, Rhiannon Rae Simon of Nevada, Mo.; his great-grandchildren, Zoe, Ashton, Teegan, and Liam Xavier, all of Nevada, Mo.,; along with four brothers, Edward "Leslie" Mizell, Jessie "Tommy" Mizell, Milton "Mick" Mizell and James "Jimmy" Mizell, all of Alabama; and one sister, Velva Warren of Mississippi.

Funeral service on Monday, June 22, at Sutton Memorial Funeral Home, 1701 Sycamore Ave. Interment will follow the service at Mountain View Cemetery, 1301 Stockton Hill Road.
