David Joseph Lopez

Native Grand Canyon resident David Lopez, 53, passed away on Saturday Oct. 25, 2008 after a long bout with lung and throat cancer.

David spent his entire life at the Canyon graduating from Grand Canyon High School in 1973. He worked part-time for the National Park Service on the trail crew and spent the last 14 years working with the water department specializing in water line repair in the Canyon itself, until his illness forced an early retirement.

David was a caring and loving person who enjoyed hunting and cooking exotic wild game. He was a tremendous brother, a loving son and caring uncle. David will be missed by all of those who knew him.

He is survived by his mother Josie Lopez of Seligman; sisters Margaret Alvarado of Seligman and Mari Celseste of Las Vegas; and brother Dan Lopez, a current resident of Grand Canyon.

A Rosary was held Friday, Oct. 31, 2008 at El Cristo Rey Catholic Church. A Mass was held on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008 at the community building.

David Joseph Lopez, 53, a lifetime resident of Grand Canyon National Park, passed away Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008 in Seligman after a two year battle with cancer. He was surrounded by numerous family members and friends.

David graduated from Grand Canyon High School in 1973 and began his career with the National Park Service soon after. He worked for GCNPS until he retired in 2008. David had a passion for hunting, cooking, the San Francisco Giants and spending time with his family. He was a quiet and simple man who never had a bad thing to say about anyone. He was the best son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend and will be greatly missed by all.

He was proceeded in death by his father Ray Lopez and is survived by his mother Josie Lopez of Seligman; his brother Dan Lopez of Grand Canyon; sisters Margaret Alvarado (Arthur) of Seligman and Mari Celeste Lopez of Las Vegas; nieces Yolanda Simon (Starbuck), Erica Alvarado, Talia Lee; and nephews Aaron Lopez (Michelle), Gabriel Alvarado (Shelby) and Vincent Alvarado.

A Rosary was held at El Cristo Rey Catholic Church on Friday, Oct. 31, 2008. Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008 at the Community Building with a reception immediately following at the Quality Inn.
