Thomas Gerald Chilton

Thomas Gerald "Jerry" Chilton, 93, died on July 16, 2007.

He was born in Lordsburg, New Mexico, and grew up in Miami, Arizona. He received his undergraduate degree from Northern Arizona University and his graduate degree from the University of Southern California.

Jerry worked most of his life for Magma Copper Company in Superior, Arizona as the Assistant to the President and Vice President of the San Manuel Arizona Railroad Company. In his service to Arizona, he was a past state commander of the American Legion, past district governor of Rotary, past president of the Arizona Easter Seal Society, Arizona Historical Society and N.A.U. alumni association and served as Chairman of the Board of Blue Cross/Blue Shield and was on its board for 20 years.

In his service to Pinal County, he was past president of the Pinal County Historical Society, a member of the Pinal County Merit System Council and the Development Board and a past chairman of the Air Pollution Hearing Board.

He was active in his community, serving as Chairman of the Superior Sanitary Board and was a past post commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. J

erry received the first Distinguished Citizen Award given by N.A.U. He enlisted in the US Air Force as a private in WWII and left the service as a captain, having served in the South Pacific, Japan and Korea.

In the last years he missed all of his friends at the White Mountain Country Club in Pinetop, where he was one of the original members. He also served for ten years on the board of trustees of Wasatch Academy in Mt. Pleasant, Utah.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years Maxine Blackman Chilton, who served as the National President of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Jerry and Maxine established a foundation at N.A.U. for a scholarship for students pursuing education careers.

He is survived by his three children, Jerry, Jr. of Mesa, Stephen of Salt Lake City, Utah and Mary Margaret "Peggy" Closky of Tucson, seven grandchildren, a brother Kenneth of Tucson, a sister Evelyn Sauve of Mesa and a sister-in-law Margaret Chilton of Tempe.

A funeral service will be Saturday, July 21, 2007 at 10:30 am at the Superior Presbyterian Church at 100 N. Magma, Superior, Arizona.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Thomas Gerald and Maxine Blackman Chilton Scholarship fund at N.A.U., P.O. Box 4094, Flagstaff, Arizona 86011-4094.

Interment was at the Mountain View Cemetery in Hayden, Gila, Arizona.
