| Published by Yuma Sun on Nov. 22, 2022 - Yuma, Arizona - Gary John Yazzie was 78 years old when God called him home on November 15, 2022. We are comforted by knowing he was welcomed with open arms by God our Father. He was a great husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend. He was born on June 7, 1944 in Two Grey Hills, New Mexico. Gary attended Toadlena Boarding School and graduated from Phoenix Indian School in 1965. He furthered his career by attending Vocational School in Custom Upholstery in Oakland, CA. He became a Custom Upholster and was employed in El Cerrito, CA from 1966 to 1973. On February 3, 1969 he married his beloved wife of 53 years Josephine-Jeanie Yazzie. Gary was a member of the Christian Reformed Church in San Francisco, CA. He moved to Winterhaven, CA in 1973 with his wife and family. Gary was employed by Mary Hollenbeck Upholstery in Yuma, AZ. Then was employed by Ft. Yuma Indian Hospital from July 1997 to August 2016 which he retired as a Driver/Custodial Worker after 19 years of dedicated service. He was a member of Mt. Zion Church. Gary enjoyed drawing, fishing, being outdoors, playing his guitar, taking drives, eating at Brownies, spending time with family, befriending people he encountered and enjoyed reading and studying God's word. He is survived by his wife Josephine-Jeanie Yazzie of Winterhaven, CA; his daughter Yvonne (Diego) Galvan; his son Garrison (Christine) Yazzie; granddaughter Ayizanna Yazzie; sisters Mae Deschene, Pearl James, Rose Ignacio; sister-inlaws Catherine Yazzie, Peggy Yazzie and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins from both the Navajo and Quechan Nations. He is preceded in death by his son, Bennett Yazzie; father, John Yazzie; mother, Alice McKenzie; brothers: Harry Yazzie, Jimmie Yazzie, David Yazzie, Willie Yazzie; sister, Grace Yazzie Dixon. The viewing and service will be held on Monday, November 28, 2022 from 10:00 am to 11:30 am at Zion Church 2445 E 24th St Yuma, AZ. On November 29, 2022 a viewing and service will be held at Desert View Funeral Home from 10:00 am to 11:30 am US-491 Shiprock, NM. Gary's final resting place will be at the Quechan Cemetary, Winterhaven CA on December 2, 2022 from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Pallbearers will be: Dustin Jackson, Conrad Jackson, Sam Yazzie, Emmett Hartt, Jr, Darryl Escalanti, Dustin Escalanti.
