Published by Today's News Herald from Jul. 27 to Jul. 28, 2024 - Lake Havasu City, Arizona - Thomas William Mecum, 80, passed away peacefully at his longtime home in Lake Havasu City, AZ, on July 16, 2024. He was born in 1944 to William and Helen (Duck) Mecum in upstate New York. Raised in Syracuse, NY, he was a proud graduate of the first class of Onondaga Community College, where he made lifelong friends. Upon graduating Murray State University, he honorably served in the U.S. Army. Tom later went on to work in marketing and sales in the telecommunications and insurance industries in Hershey, PA, and in Lake Havasu City, AZ. A lifelong lover of sports, he was an avid Yankees fan and golfer, who also enjoyed watching football and basketball. His favorite sports news came from recaps of his grandchildren's basketball, cross country, and lacrosse events. He also enjoyed gardening, a hobby instilled in him by his grandfather, as well as spending time with his cats, listening to music, and traveling. He was fiercely proud of his children and grandchildren, and it was clear how important family was to him, regularly driving cross country to visit them and his friends. Tom also enjoyed giving back to his communities, volunteering for a variety of charitable and professional organizations throughout his lifetime. He will be remembered for being a stubbornly independent but kindhearted and outgoing father and grandfather. He is survived by his loving daughter Kelly Mecum Nowlan (Patrick) and his grandchildren, Sophia and Jack. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his son, Will Mecum. |
