Published by Today's News-Herald on Sept. 1, 2024 - Lake Havasu City, Arizona - Roger Carl Marquis joined his Father in Heaven on August 1, 2024, after an arduous journey down the road of Alzheimer's Disease. Born on May 30, 1934, in Marshalltown, Iowa to Albert and Victoria Marquis. The spoiled youngest of 7, he was always proud of his two older brothers who served and fought in WWII. He graduated from Marshalltown High School and moved to California, where he attended UCLA, and graduated from Cal State Northridge with a degree in Biology. He served two years in the US Army, part of that time in Southern France. After his discharge from the Army, he passed the California Boards as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist. He worked as Chief Technologist of Pacoima Lutheran Hospital, later opening his first private outpatient lab. In 1972/73, he relocated his family to Parker, Arizona and opened a small lab, then served as Administrator for Parker Hospital. After that, he went into what he called his "construction phase" building swimming pools in Lake Havasu, but his real calling was laboratory medicine. He worked at Havasu Community Hospital until opening his 3rd lab in May 1978. Lake Havasu Medical Laboratory, aka "Roger's Lab" served the community for 29 years, selling it to Labcorp and retiring in 2007. He was an ardent bird hunter; dove, ducks, and quail, never missing opening day. In the nonhunting season, he loved fishing for large mouth bass on the lake and Topock Marsh. Golf was an obsession year round, and he loved to travel to all the different golf courses in the area. He loved his animals, always commenting that he "liked dogs better than people". Roger is survived by his wife of 38 years, Gwenna, daughters, Stephanie Hatch(Gary), Cinder Marquis; bonus daughters, Camille Matzdorff (Bill), Mindi Arceo (Travis Clendendon); grandchildren, Tiera, Chase, Dane, Meagan, Gregory, Kobe, and Parker; 9 great-grandchildren; sister, Marilyn Stewart; doggie Larry, and cats, Gracie and Gus. He is preceded in death by his parents; Albert and Victoria, brothers Kenneth and Howard, and sisters Lois, Arlene, and Betty Lee. Roger lived life with a zeal, having a quirky, witty sense of humor. He loved music, playing his piano, reading, writing and sharing his philosophies with anyone that would listen. He was one funny guy! Roger had an unwavering faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Even when everything else was lost in the fog, his faith remained. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Hospice of Havasu; Ryan, Angela, Laurie, Janey, Tami, Sylvia, and Barb for their loving care and compassion over the last three years. And a very special thanks to Dr. Donald Nelson for his unwavering friendship and visits. Details for a Celebration of Life will be posted at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Havasu, WAHS, or Calvary Baptist Church. |
