Published by Today's News Herald from Mar. 26 to Mar. 27, 2025 - Lake Havasu City, Arizona - Adalbert Schwarz was born on March 9, 1935, in Ernsthausen, Yugoslavia, the only child of Franz and Maria Schwarz. Many of you are familiar with, and some even share, his family's difficult history and the memories of their homeland. With the incredible support of Father Lani, a German Catholic priest from St. Stephen's Church in Los Angeles, Bertl and his parents immigrated to the United States aboard the USNS General Harry Taylor. Father Lani helped thousands of Germans escape their war-torn homeland. The family arrived at Ellis Island on June 26, 1952, and then traveled by train to Los Angeles, California. Stripped of their birthrights and labeled as "stateless," the church provided each family with $60 and assistance in finding work. Determined to build a new life, they worked hard to learn the language, gain citizenship, and establish themselves, deeply grateful for the opportunity to start anew. In 1957, Bertl married Ivka, and together they raised three children: Werner, Erwin, and Marlene. Their family later grew to include nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Bertl's first job was at HEHR Manufacturing, where he worked for 22 years producing RV windows. In 1975, he left to pursue a new venture, purchasing a restaurant in the San Fernando Valley. He and Ivka successfully ran the Valley Hofbrau until 1985, when the building was sold to make way for a new shop-ping center. Afterward, Bertl worked part-time in the deli department at Vons Grocery Store until his re- tirement. In 1994, he and Ivka moved to Lake Havasu City, where they spent their later years. Bertl battled Parkinson's disease with strength and resilience. He faced it head-on, never allowing it to define him. He fought without complaint for as long as his body allowed. He lived a full life, making the most of what he had, and he will be deeply missed by his large family and many, many friends. |
