Paul M. Pope, 82, of Chandler died May 28, 2004 in Mesa. Visitation was Wednesday at Simes Mortuaries Coolidge Chapel. The graveside service was Thursday in Florence Cemetery, with Pastor Bob Edmondson officiating. Mr. Pope was born Dec. 14, 1921 in Macomb, Missouri, to Lee and Lavinia Pope. He grew up on a farm in Missouri. In 1942, during World War II, he joined the Navy and served six years. After the war he met Ruby Wymer, and they married in 1950. In 1959 he went to work for the federal Bureau of Prisons as a corrections officer, and they moved to California. He came to work at the federal prison in Florence in 1963. He transferred to other prisons before retiring in Atlanta in 1979, then returned to Arizona. He was devoted to his family. He enjoyed camping, hunting, traveling and expanding his education. In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Rhonda Faye Schienle of Littleton, Colo.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Faye Boyer, Velda Binley, Vesta Short and Ruth Moody, and a brother, Clyde Pope. Simes Mortuaries Florence Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
