Alan Blake Short of Dolan Springs, Arizona, passed away peacefully at
the age of 75 on April 16, 2025. Born on Oct. 30, 1949, in Kwajalein
Atoll to Vivian and Andrew Short, Alan’s upbringing as a "Navy Brat" led
him to live in various locations, including Adok, Alaska, and San Diego,
California.

He graduated from JFK High School in Barstow, California in 1967 and
subsequently worked for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad
before enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1969, where he served
for a decade and reached the rank of Staff Sergeant. After his military
service, Alan worked as an engineer at the Goldstone Deep Space Tracking
Complex and later at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena,
California, contributing to several NASA missions until his retirement
in 2005. Following a near-fatal heart attack in 1998, Alan enjoyed 27
more years defined by love, family and community service.

In those years, Alan met Susan Yates and together they opened and
operated an antique and craft store in Hesperia, California. In 2007,
the couple relocated to Golden Valley, Arizona and were married on May
7, 2011. Alan actively contributed to the communities of Golden Valley
and Dolan Springs through various organizations including the Golden
Valley Pistoleros & Roses Organization, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)
Post 2555 and Post 9833, and American Legion Post 88 and Post 22. His
extensive involvement included serving as a Karaoke DJ, organizing
community events such as Golden Valley Days, Easter Egg Hunts, and
Thanksgiving dinners, as well as managing bookkeeping for the American
Legion Post 88. Together with Susan, he also founded and operated the
Rednecks Feed Store until 2022.

Apart from his community involvement, Alan was an enthusiast of science
fiction, horror, and country and western music. He also enjoyed building
web pages on his computer and fishing. A lover of animals, Alan spent
his time at home surrounded by his devoted dogs and cats.

Alan is survived by his loving wife of 13 years, Susan Yates; his
children, Adam Short, Kelly (Noah) Dormady, Laura (Russell) Blunk,
Shelly James, Jason Godina, Monique (Daniel) Uriarte and Nathan Roath;
several grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A private memorial service will be arranged at a later date.
