Wickenburg Sun (Wickenburg, Arizona) Wednesday, April 23, 2025, p. A-4 Walter Thomas, 78, of Wickenburg, passed away at Hospice of the Valley on April 15, 2025. Originally from Osceola, Ark., Walt was a beloved husband, brother, uncle, friend and teacher. After graduating from Ouachita Baptist University in 1972, Walt made his way to Arizona. He accepted a teaching position at The Orme School, a college-preparatory boarding school in Mayer, Ariz., where he met and married Becky (Hood) Thomas, a fellow educator and the love of his life, on Dec. 29, 1987. After leaving The Orme School, Walt and Becky moved to Nevada, where they taught for several years before settling in Wickenburg during the summer of 1995. Walt began teaching at Wickenburg High School, where he spent many years as a valued teacher. He also served as the Wickenburg High School District's science coordinator. Walt's subjects were chemistry and physics, along with a very unique astronomy program that he developed. Through the Arizona Science Teachers Association, Walt helped guide other science teachers throughout the state on the subject of astronomy. Well-known and respected in the Arizona astronomy community, Walt was a member of multiple astronomy clubs including the Wickenburg Dark Sky Association. Besides his hobbies, which included building model boats, Walt also loved to travel. He had a kind spirit and will be missed by his family, friends and all who knew him. Walt was preceded in death by his wife, Becky. He is survived by his brother, Joe Thomas, and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will take place at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22 at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Wickenburg. Contributions in Walt's memory can be made to St. Jude's Cancer Research Center. |
