Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on June 4, 1922
Departed on June 22, 2005 and resided in Sedona, Arizona.

Robert E. Carroll, 83, died on June 22nd in Cottonwood. Born in Pittsburgh, Penn., Mr. Carroll had lived in Sedona since moving here from San Diego with his wife, Shirley, in 1989.

Mr. Carroll will be greatly missed by his family members and friends, who will remember a kind, generous, strong man, blessed with a sense of humor, a clear eye, an easy wit, and a consistent adherence to honesty and truth. A clear thinker, willing to do the hard, detailed work necessary to realize a vision, Mr. Carroll also will be greatly missed by the many who worked with him on building a better community.

In Sedona, Mr. Carroll's dedication to build community was evidenced by his leadership in many organizations. He chaired the superintendent's subcommittee committee during the formation of Sedona Red Rock High School, and he was the founding president and CEO and then chairman and CEO of the Sedona Cultural Park.

President of the Saint John Vianney Catholic Church Parish Advisory Council for several years, Mr. Carroll also served as president of the Sedona Arts Center board in 2004 and as the Arts Center's president emeritus.

Mr. Carroll was president of the Sedona 30 in 2004, and he was chairman of the Marilyn Sunderman Foundation board at the time of his death.

Before moving to Sedona, Mr. Carroll had a distinguished career as an educator and business executive. After earning a bachelor's degree from Duquesne University and a law degree from the University of Pittsburgh, he taught logic, political science, government, and law courses at Duquesne.

In the corporate world, he put his systems engineering, procurement and contract administration expertise to work fro Hughes Aircraft; Sperry-Rand Corporation; North American Aviation (Rockwell), Space Division; Raytheon Corporation; System Development Corporation; and SYS, a Public Corporation.

He was especially proud of his North American Aviation years, during which he served as assistant program manager and then vice president of the Apollo Spacecraft Program.

Mr. Carroll was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia, and by his daughter Robin Snell.

He is survived by wife, Shirley, two grandchildren, Benjamin Snell and Anna Gallegos of Calif., and two step-daughters, Jill Matichak and Lisa Matichak of San Francisco.

There will be a memorial service for Mr. Carroll at Saint John Vianney Church on Tuesday, June 28 at 10:30 a.m. Contributions in his memory can be sent to the Sedona Arts Center, P.O. Box 569, Sedona, Ariz., 86339.
