DEATH OF INDIAN SCOUT FOUGHT WITH BILL CODY Jack Stevens died Friday November 11th at the County hospital. He was taken to the hospital the first of the month as a private patient and was suffering from yellow jaundice. A few days before his death adema of the perotinitis developed and he rapidly grew worse. He was conscious up until the last day and night of his death. The deceased was 65 years of age and was born in Tennessee. He was educated to become a Presbyterian minister but gave that up and came West when he was about 21 years of age. He entered the U.S. Government service as an Indian Scout and fought with Bill Cody and Will Damman. He was present when the famous Apache chief, Geronimo, surrendered to Gen. Lorton. At the time of surrender, Stevens was sent to the hospital at Ft. Lowell and was later honorably discharged. He refused to accept a pension at the close of his service and since made a living by doing light work such as book-keeping, etc. He sold tickets at the Indian Hot Springs during the summer. Funeral services were held Sunday and were conducted by Bishop Greenhalgh. Burial was made in the Union Cemetery. Graham Guardian November 18, 1921 |
