Ruth Anneliese Welcome, 86, passed away Sunday, March 6, 2005, in Peoria, Arizona.

Ruth Welcome, the only woman professional Zither artist in the United States and Canada, was born in Germany and came to this country at the age of eight. She received her formal music education at Juilliard School of Music in New York City, New York, where she majored in violin and piano. Miss Welcome¹s concert career with the Zither evolved as a result of her volunteer work during and after World War II when she entertained in military hospitals. The very popular ³Third Man² theme introduced the Zither to the American public. Miss Welcome made her professional debut in New York City in 1953, and became a standard attraction at Manhattan¹s famous Hampshire House where she appeared for five years. After leaving New York, she played all over the United States and Canada. As exclusive recording artist for Capital Records, Miss Welcome recorded 18 albums, which found a popular market not only in America but also in countries all over the world. Ruth came to Sun City from Connecticut in May 1975. A memorial service is planned for a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Sunland Memorial Park, 623-933-0161.
