John R. Hassler

John R. Hassler, 75, of Dillon, Mont., died peacefully at home Dec. 31, 2008 of cancer. John was born Aug. 12, 1933 in Tulsa, Okla. to Arthur and Francis Hassler.

He attended school in Tulsa and graduated in 1951 from Marquette High School.

John attended Oklahoma State in Stillwater briefly before joining the Navy in 1953. While in the Navy he served aboard the USS Steuben County LST 1138. He returned to Oklahoma and enrolled at the University of Oklahoma and graduated in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering.

John married Patty Jo Bowden in the fall of 1958 and together they had three daughters.

Immediately after graduation he went to work for AT&T in Phoenix, Ariz. and worked for the company until he retired in September 1998.

During his 36-year career with AT&T he lived in Phoenix, Blythe, San Francisco, Socorro, N.M., Rock Springs, Wyo., and Dillon.

After his retirement he continued to work for AT&T as an independent contractor until 2008.

John is survived by his wife Phyllis Denton of Dillon; his former wife, Patty Jo Hassler of Blythe; daughters, Kathleen Hassler of Blythe, Laura Marquess (Dana) of Prescott, Ariz. and Sharon Sprague (John) of Cherry Valley, Calif.; grandchildren, Mathew Sanchez of Davis, Calif., Jordan and Sidney Bernhardt of Prescott, Ariz., John Paul Sprague of Cherry Valley; sisters Mary Budd (David) and Catherine Hassler of Tulsa; niece, Allison Hassler of Tulsa; step-daughters, Elizabeth McDonnell of Lakenheath, England, Marna Krajeski of Wakefield, R.I., Laura Breece of Indianapolis, Ind., Angie Mulkey of Hampton, Va., Claire Shervanick of Las Cruces, N.M.; and 11 grandchildren by his five step-daughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents Art and Francis and his step-mother Elaine Hassler. John will be laid to rest in the family plot in Tulsa, Okla.
