Posted 2009-07-03 by Edward Peed
Barbara Gonzales Smith, 43, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, in an accident just outside Hayden. She was born in Ray Feb. 3, 1960.

She was employed at Asarco as a shovel and drill mechanic for over 12 years, a position she was particularly proud of. She was the only female in the field at the Ray Pit and worked very hard to get her credentials. She was also a member of the Steelworkers Local 915.

She enjoyed following the NASCAR series and was a fan of race car driver Jeff Gordon. She also liked to dance.

As a life-time resident of the community she was well known, appreciated and seemed to make an impact on just about everyone who knew her.

Survivors include her parents, Joe Y. and Josie H. Gonzales of Kearny; children, John Paul Gonzales of Tempe and Jaycie Michele Smith of Kearny; brothers, Joe (Cathy) Hernandez, Richard Hernandez, and Gilbert (Donna) Hernandez, all of Phoenix; sisters, Jo Ann Gonzales of Mesa, Isabel G. (Eric) Contreras of Phoenix, Mercy (Gary) Burnstad of Texas, and Bonnie Mariscal of Winkelman; and two grandchildren.

Rosary and wake services were held Sunday, Jan. 25, at Infant Jesus of Prague Catholic Church in Kearny. Fr. William Taft celebrated the Mass of Christian Burial Monday, Jan. 26, also at the church. Graveside services and interment were held at Kearny’s Memorial Cemetery.

Arrangements were entrusted to Griffith Mortuary.
