Earl (Pappy) Custer

Earl (Pappy) Custer Jr., born in Johnstown, Pa., on March 14, 1916, passed away on June 25, 2009. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Mabel Custer. He was the fourth of five children of Earl and Dolly Custer.

Pappy is survived by his son, Roger Earl; daughter-in-law Sandra; and two grandchildren, Carrie Maroney of Carefree, Ariz., and Todd Earl Custer of Abilene, Texas. There are five great-grandchildren, Justin and Sean Maroney, Britney King, Jeremy Earl Custer and Nicholas Custer. He is also survived by numerous loving nieces and nephews.

Pappy lived a long and adventurous life, having served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater. He loved to play golf and travel. Having visited most states, he ventured to Europe twice and also visited China with his son. He celebrated his 70th birthday with a three-day hike in the Grand Canyon with his son. Pappy was 80 when he hiked the Havasupai Canyon with his son Roger, granddaughter Carrie, her husband Kent and his great-grandsons Justin and Sean. Pappy loved his entire family and will be greatly missed. His family will conduct a celebration of his life.

The family would like to express sincere thanks to Hospice Family Care at the Crossings for their warm and compassionate care.

The Neptune Society has assisted the family with cremation.
