Posted 2009-07-05 by Pat Wilson
Landis Stephen Kurz, born in Budapest, Hungary on July 29, 1911, passed away on June 3, 2004 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Mr. Kurz emigrated from Hungary/Romania to Dayton, Ohio in 1923. He graduated from General Motors Institute with a degree in Electrical Engineering and a member of Alpha Tau Iota Honorary Scholastic Society. His entire career was spent with General Motors at what was then Delco Products Division, retiring as Director of Reliability.

After he retired in 1973, he and his wife moved to Carefree, Arizona. Landis and his wife, Nelle, were avid rockhounds, and Landis excelled at gem cutting gifting relatives and friends with his beautiful stones.

He was preceded in death by his wife Nelle, his parents, Anna and Julius Kurz, brothers Joseph and Julius, and sister Helen. He is survived by nieces, nephews, godson and loving friends in Arizona as well as across the country.

Landis recently wrote about his life at the persuasion of his family and friends. In his writings, it became very apparent that his relationship with Nelle and his love of America were most important in his life.

Memorial donations can go to Westminster Village, 12000 North 90th Street, Scottsdale, Arizona 85260. Westminster is the nonprofit lifecare community that was Landis' home for the past seven years. At Landis' request, there will be no service. His and Nelle's urns will be placed together in the Urn Garden at Paradise Memorial Gardens in Scottsdale. Landis' work here is done, and he is going home to be with his Nelle. Published in the Arizona Republic on 6/9/2004.
