Roger David Swick

Roger David Swick was one of a kind. He was born in Wesleco, Texas on April 17, 1947, but in January 1951 his family moved to Riverside, Calif. where he was raised with his only sibling Daryl.

Roger graduated from Norte Vista High School, Riverside in 1965 and joined the Army in March of 1968. Roger was soon after sent to Vietnam with the 1st Air Cavalry Division where he served two tours of duty and survived being shot down in a helicopter. He was awarded the Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, two Army Commendation Medals and the National Defense Service Medal.

After Roger's term of service was over he met his wonderful wife Ellen and they were married on Dec 4, 1971. Roger and Ellen have three daughters: Michelle, 31, married to Jason Adams with one son, Beau; Laurie, 29, married to Val Medd with one daughter, Courtney, one son, Logan, and expecting one more in October; Sherri, engaged to marry Kenneth Woodhouse.

Roger worked for ADOT for 18 years and in his free time enjoyed spending time with his three grandchildren attending NASCAR events and fishing. He was also very active in the local VFW post where he was post commander.

Roger was a dedicated volunteer at the Congress Volunteer Fire Department where he was the Assistant Fire Chief. His volunteer work also included such things as playing Santa Clause, Smokey the Bear, volunteering at the water company and helping with the light parade, just to mention a few.

Roger was a wonderful and loving father, grandfather, friend and most of all a husband.

Roger will be greatly missed but always remembered and loved by us all.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 26 at Congress Volunteer Fire Department.
