Robert F. Hubbard

Robert F. Hubbard passed away on June 30, 2008 in Fountain Hills after a long illness.

He is survived by his wife, June Anne (Westlake) Hubbard, three children Julianne Peterson and husband Greg of Wayzata, Minn., Dr. Jon Hubbard and his wife Linda of Minneapolis, Minn. and Rev. Jayne Hubbard of Carefree. He is survived by three grandchildren, Jessica Hubbard, Joshua and Chad Peterson, one great grandchild, Jordon; a brother Charles Hubbard of Fountain Hills and Minnesota and sister Jean and husband Herb Pfremmer of Virginia, Minn.

Robert was born in Winona, Minn. in 1921, grew up in South Minneapolis and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.A. in Chemical Engineering.

After being commissioned an officer at the Naval Academy, he served with distinction on board the submarine the USS Manta in WWII.

Robert worked for Cargill Inc. of Wayzata, Minn. and retired as vice president in commodity marketing after 37 years. During this time he traveled extensively in the US and around the world developing, managing and creating better grain elevator operations. He was a frequent spokesman before Congressional subcommittees, trade groups and news media on these subjects.

He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences’ Research Council and the Minnesota Environmental Science Foundation, Inc. He became a leading expert on grain elevator operations and his innovations, programs and policies were regarded as the standard for the grain industry.

While residing in Mound, Minn. he was an active member of Grace Baptist Church serving as deacon youth advisor and Sunday school teacher. He served as councilman and later mayor of Minnetrista, Minn. He was scoutmaster of a local Boy Scout troop and spent many wonderful weeks in the Boundary Waters leading wilderness canoe trips. He was on the Board of trustees at Northwestern College in St. Paul, Minn.

His retirement was in Vergas, Minn. and Fountain Hills where he enjoyed golfing, skiing and wilderness canoeing and camping. He also enjoyed sharing memories of WWII with students in surrounding schools.

A celebration of his life will be at Northwestern College in St. Paul, Minn. on July 21. Internment will be at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis. Memorials may be sent to Trinity Hospice and Northwestern College.
