THE WICKENBURG SUN THE WEEK OF JANUARY 15, 2003 Elaine A. Zimmerman Elaine A. Zimmerman, 90, passed away Jan. 10, 2003 in Surprise, Ariz. Elaine was a third generation native of Arizona, from a pioneer family. Elaine was born at Lateral 17 and Christy Road, just one week after Arizona achieved statehood. Her mother, Sydney Vensel Rhodes, was a 1906 graduate of Tempe Normal School (now Arizona State University) and a teacher in Territorial Arizona until her death during the devastating flu epidemic in 1918. Her father, Albert (Dusty) Rhodes, was a miner and mechanic at the Vulture Mine and other notable mines in early Arizona. Elaine was a graduate of Phoenix Union High School and worked as a telegraph operator. Later, she operated a dairy with her late husband Fritz, in West Phoenix. Elaine was a member of "Arizona First Families." Her humor and spirit will be missed. Elaine is preceded in death by her husband Fritz, son James Zimmerman and sister Eva Johns. Elaine is survived by son Jay (Carol) Zimmerman; a half-sister Ellen McGowan; granddaughter Dusti Cope; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 14 at Frey Funeral Home, followed by interment at Greenwood Cemetery in Phoenix.
