Debbie Bates was born in Oakland, Calif. on Feb. 3, 1952. She passed away July 5, 2009. She attended elementary schools in Sonoma, Calif., and graduated from Sonoma Valley High School in 1970. After high school, she attended Rick's College in Idaho and then received her AA degree from Mesa Community College.

Deb is survived by her children's father, Randy Bates; her mother, Marian Steele; her sister, Elaine Morgan Jorgensen; brother Charles Leon Morgan; as well as siblings Janice Samson Willman, James D. Samson, Lisa Gallo Hall and Scott R. Samson; and a brother, John Gallo, who preceded her in death in April 2008.

Debbie is the beloved mother of seven children and 16 amazing grandchildren who are the light of her life and include Jason and Michelle Bates, Krista and Jason Meeks, Jenna and Damon Lines, Angie (Bow) and Matt Sloan, Stephanie and Max Anderson, Trevor and Risa Bates and Travis Bates. We believe "Grammy," as she is affectionately known by her grandchildren, is now caring for baby Beckham, who passed away last December 2008.

Deb has lived in Prescott Valley, Ariz., for the last six years and loved the area and weather and knew this was truly her home. She was a member of the Latter-day Saints, Glassford Hill Ward, and served diligently wherever and whenever she was needed in a variety of callings. Her testimony and love for the Savior never wavered, even through her serious illness. When her health began failing, Deb would still serve by crocheting baby hats and blankets for new moms in her ward and to give to local hospitals.

Debbie is our angel and shining example of Christ-like love and charity to everyone and had many friends because of her love for all people.

At the time of her death, Debbie was at home surrounded by her family and friends, as she wanted. Our beloved mother, daughter and sister's physical body might have failed her, but her spirit never dimmed. We will miss her so very much until we meet again.

Viewing was Thursday, July 9, 2009, at Bunker Garden Chapel, 33 North Centennial Way, Mesa, Ariz. Funeral services will be from 10:15 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, July 10, 2009, at Glassford Hill Ward Chapel, 7885 E. Long Look Drive, Prescott Valley, Ariz.
