Merlie M. Newbill Allen, age 100, of Wickenburg, died Nov.30, 2006. She was born August 8, 1906 in Madras, Ore., to James and Florence Hurt. Her parents were homesteaders in the central Oregon area in 1904.
She graduated from Sweet Home High School in Oregon in 1925. She then attended Oregon Normal School in Monmouth, Ore. Her first teaching job was in Haycreek Ranch in Oregon and then at Gateway a few miles from Haycreek.
She married Howard Newbill of Grizzly, Ore., in 1927. They were involved in cattle ranching and farming for many years. Two children were born to this union, James and Phyllis. Howard and Merlie wintered in Wickenburg in the late 1960s at Desert Cypress Park. Howard died in 1973 and in 1975 Merlie married Harold Allen. They wintered in Wickenburg and then moved to Hemet, Calif., returning to Madras, Ore., for the summers.
In the Spring of 2002 Merlie and Harold moved to Wickenburg to be near family.
She is survived by her husband Harold; son James Newbill; grandson Anthony and his wife Kelly and son Austin; and brother James Hurt, all of Wickenburg. She is also survived by daughter Phyllis Griswold of Culver, Ore.; granddaughters Tamara Newbill of Gresham, Ore., Vickey Kirk of Brownsville, Ore., and two grandsons of Oregon and several great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.
There will be no services at her request. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
