HODGE, Phillips Winslow (Phil)


Phillips Winslow "Phil" Hodge, free-lance artist, known for 35 years as advertising manager of Hanny's clothing store in Phoenix, passed away July 17, 1998. He also served for many years as frequent illustrator, author and art director for the Arizona Republic's former Sunday magazine. Most recently, he worked from his own studio, where he wrote and illustrated children's books. Phil was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Aug. 27, 1926. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1944 and the University of Iowa in 1949. Phil received a degree in journalism and was honored for his cartooning while at the U of I. He married Mildred Hermann in Madrid, Iowa, in 1951. The couple moved to Phoenix in 1952 and raised two daughters. Widowed in 1981, he married Beatrice Parker Brant, who survives him, in 1982. He also is survived by daughters, Susan Hodge-Parker and Deborah Hodge-Moakley; and brothers, George D. Hodge of Marion and David W. Hodge of Oshkosh, Wis. He asked that friends wishing to remember him make donations to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower, Phoenix, Ariz. 85014; or First Congregational United Church of Christ, 1407 N.
