Edith Holman Rhodes, widow of F. Joseph ("Dusty") Rhodes, died January 8, 2003, at her home. Edith, born April 12, 1904 in Negaunee, Michigan, was the daughter of Caroline Staples Holman and William Henry Holman, who were both natives of Cornwall, England.
Edith was a graduate of Northern Normal School, Marquette, Michigan, currently called Northern Michigan University. She taught 7th and 8th grade English in Wakefield, Michigan, prior to her marriage.
She was active in Women's Clubs and church women's organizations, particularly in Oneonta, New York. There, from 1931 through 1962, the emphasis of her life and devotion were to her children and husband, who was the manager of the local JC Penney store.
Edith and Dusty moved to Santa Barbara, California after his retirement and then later on to Sun City, Arizona.
After Dusty's death in 1981, Edith moved to the Glencroft Retirement Community in Glendale, Arizona. Most recently she lived in Peoria, Arizona, where she was a member of Bethany Bible Church.
She was predeceased by her sister, Lillian Holman Clippinger, and three of her four brothers, W. Earl Holman, Stanley Holman, and Edward Holman.
Survivors include her daughter ,Deo Rhodes Boyland, St. Helena Island, S.C. and sons, William H. Rhodes, Lexington, Mass. and Nat H. Rhodes, Phoenix, Az.; her brother, George Holman, Spokane, Wash., nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and eleven nieces and nephews.
Burial services will be private.
A memorial service will be held at Bethany Bible Church (Chapel Building), 6060 N. 7th Ave., Phoenix at 4 p.m. January 11th.
